Four things we expect from Apple iPhone 12 2020: Rumors and Leaks

In rear cameras, iPhone 12 can have 3D depth-sensing

Apple launched its trio of iPhone 11 models in September (just four months ago. The rumor mill is already gazing across the horizon and making assumptions about 2020 and the forthcoming iPhone 12 2020(some rumors for the 2021 iPhones have already begun).

Bear in mind that we do not know what the official names of the new iPhones are going to be— and Apple hasn’t confirmed anything about them— so we’re going to go with the iPhone 12 for now. To add 3D depth sensors to its rear cameras and new screen sizes, Apple is also rumored to include a feature that would make it competitive with its competitors: 5G connectivity.

It will be several months before we approach the expected launch of the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max in September 2020, but check back with this piece frequently as we will keep updating it with the most likely and compelling rumors.

iPhone 12 could have smaller and bigger screens

One of the more persistent rumors about future iPhones is that Apple may release new screen sizes. One of the iPhones 12s could have a 5.4-inch screen (the iPhone 11 Pro has the smallest display, which measures 5.8 inches). And the iPhone 2020 Pro-Max may go up to 6.7 inches (the iPhone 11 Pro-Max has a 6.5-inch display).

There’s also guesswork that the display for the iPhone 12 will have 120Hz refresh rate. The majority of phones refresh at 60 frames per second, or 60Hz, but other phones, such as the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7 Pro, refresh rate at 90Hz. The Razer Phone 2 gaming handset has a 120Hz display, too. With a higher frame refresh rate, when scrolling through items like web pages and games, a phone feels faster and smoother.

Apple could introduce five new iPhones in 2020

Rumors about Apple expats expanding iPhone line have been swirling around with the possibility of new display sizes. Also reported by CNET In December.

Four new iPhone 12 models will be released in the fall of 2020: a 5.4-inch model, two 6.1-inch phones, and a 6.7-inch phone. They’re all going to have OLED displays.

The senior analyst also backed such size predictions Ming Chi Kuo this week who claims the iPhone 11 Pro’s current 5.8-inch size may go down. So, the bottom-end devices will be the 5.4-inch, and one of the 6.1-inch versions probably named the iPhone 12. The other 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will then be the more expensive phones, respectively.

The 5th iPhone would then be a successor to the iPhone SE, which is looking more like the iPhone 8, and as early as the first quarter of 2020.

Can iPhone 12 bring in 5G?

Apple is no hurry to launch a 5G iPhone, so you probably won’t see one until this year— or maybe later than 2025. Optimistically, Apple analyst Kuo expects the company will launch three 5G phones by 2020. There are a few explanations for that. First, Apple is not typically the first in on mobile trends, instead preferring to perfect an emerging technology before committing to it. Recall that when those networks first launched, it was behind its rivals in making phones with 3G and 4G LTE coverage.

Secondly, Apple stopped working with leading 5G modem provider Qualcomm at one point due to a dispute over the licensing fees for Qualcomm. In April 2019, the two companies settled their litigation and then agreed to a multi-year 5G Chip deal. This led to the previous partner for 5G modems from Apple, Intel, eventually to fully exit the 5G modem market. Apple later purchased Intel’s smartphone modem unit for $1 billion. Apple is back with Qualcomm, but it started launching a 5G phone too late last year when some of its rivals released their 5G models, such as the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, LG V50 5G an5G, and S10 5G.

In May 2019, The Information revealed that it would take Apple years to design its in-house 5G modem when it comes to producing a proprietary 5G chip. “Apple has told engineers in interviews with prospective team recruits that they expect their modem to be ready by 2025.”

In rear cameras, iPhone 12 can have 3D depth-sensing

Newer iPhones have front-facing cameras which have 3D depth-sensing since the iPhone X. This feature, known as the Face ID, scans your face to unlock your phone and authorize digital payments. It has been widely assumed that Apple can take it to the back of the cameras and introduce the same system

Long-time Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo (via MacRumors and 9to5Mac) said he hopes to have a new time-of-flight camera lens on the back of the phone for two of the 2020 iPhones models.

The design would be similar to the original True Depth camera system used on the front of the phone for Face ID, except it would use a slightly different type of technology that could allow 3D mapping objects from a farther distance. This would improve its augmented reality applications significantly and take certain camera features such as Portrait Mode to the next level.
