Making a payment for government services online is going to be made easier by enabling people to make payments by using Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Mr. Oliver Dowden, The Minister for Implementation has announced that the British government will now allow payments to be made with smartphones through Google Pay and Apple Pay. He said, “We’re focused on making access to government services as easy as possible. And introducing mobile payment to GOV.UK Pay will also make transactions more secure”. He further said,”

This is another example of how we are working smarter as a government – improving services for people as well as reducing fraud and costs”.

These services are being started as trial bases by the ministry. British citizens may use their smartphone’s payment systems to pay for services through facial recognition or using fingerprint associated with the Global access Service.

An initial trial of four “Government services” becoming payable through Google Pay and Apple Pay has already been launched.

The services taking part in the initial trial are:

  1. The Global Entry Service – which will enable British citizens to get quick entrance to the United States
  2. Online basic DBS checks – these are performed before people are permitted to work in particular sectors
  3. The Registered Traveler Service – these services make it much easier for regular visitors from non-EU countries around the world to enter the United Kingdom using modern E-Gates at the border
  4. The Electronic Visa Waiver Service – which allows citizens from four countries in the Middle East traveling more easily to the UK

After following the initial trial, it is planned to roll mobile payments for further central government services, and later this year enable it to be available for local government, police and NHS organizations.

As well as becoming easier, these impressive payment choices may also be safer, simply because they allow the use of facial recognition and fingerprint technologies through users’ phones.

Mr. Till Wirth (Lead product manager for GOV.UK Pay) Said,

“Allowing people to pay for government services through Apple Pay and Google Pay means they won’t have to enter their credit or debit card information when making payments. This innovation will increase the convenience and security of GOV.UK Pay for users and hopefully make their experience online a lot easier.”
